EMBROIdERY & DRESS Donations

Palestinian embroidery, or tatreez (تطريز), is a centuries-old art form preserved and passed on to the next generation through oral history. The Tatreez Institute is an educational arts initiative focused on the preservation, documentation and research of Palestinian embroidery traditions in the diaspora.

Wafa studying a Palestinian thobe, or dress, donated by way of The Tatreez Institute and stewarded to the Museum of the Palestinian People (2022). The thobe was included as part of Wafa’s first exhibition “TATREEZ INHERITANCE” (2023) in Washington, DC.

The Tatreez Institute accepts traditional Palestinian, Syrian, Jordanian and Lebanese dress and embroidery donations for preservation, documentation and research purposes only. Donations will never be sold. The Tatreez Institute has not and will not ever sell traditional embroidery and dresses. All dresses are considered to be culturally and historically valuable and preserved for research and educational purposes only. Under certain circumstances, the dresses may be stewarded to the appropriate cultural institution and in collaboration with the donor. Financial donations are stewarded specifically for rescuing dresses from non-Indigenous sellers in North America and Europe. If you have traditional cultural objects that are not from the Levant and you need support in identifying the appropriate cultural institution to accept the donation, please contact Wafa at wafa@tatreezandtea.com.
