Printable Pattern: Qala'at Sema'an, Syria Chest Panel (Mid 20th Century)

$20.00

A 7-page embroidery pattern featuring a coat from Qalaat Samaan, from the mid-20th century. Qalaat Samaan is 30km northwest of Aleppo, and is one of the few areas in Syria that frequently uses cross-stitch. Syrian embroiderers only stitch from right to left, and on the reverse-side of the embroidery, it appears as an unbroken horizontal line.

The dress was found in the book “Arts and Crafts of Syria” by Johannes Kalter (1992), and the pattern is based from the chart provided in “Encyclopedia of Embroidery from the Arab World” by Gillian Vogelsang-Eastwood (2017).
